- Pay for most roles at Twitter is competitive with Big Tech companies like Facebook.
- Business Insider sifted through 2021 data for thousands of jobs to find just how much Twitter pays.
- Throughout Twitter, workers are making six figures, although some roles offer much higher pay.
Many of Twitter’s key workers are paid just as much in salary as those at larger tech companies, like Facebook and Google, if not slightly more on occasion.
A typical software engineer at Twitter can make a salary of $255,000 and a senior engineering manager can make upwards of $270,000, about the same as what Facebook pays and even more than Google, depending on the level of experience, according to a year’s worth of salary data. Insider pulled the information from more than 1,000 work-visa applications Twitter filed with the US government in 2021.
These figures are just base pay. Like most rival tech companies, Twitter’s total compensation packages include initial generous grants of restricted stock units, usually equal to salary, that are “refreshed” upon annual performance reviews. While Twitter’s stock was down for several months, leading some workers to consider going elsewhere given the effect on their compensation, the ongoing saga of Elon Musk attempting a hostile takeover of Twitter has had one positive impact on the company: its stock is up. Twitter employees may not be happy about much when it comes to Musk, but their shares being worth more is one positive.
So how much exactly do other Twitter workers make?
It depends on the job, of course, and as remote work has become more commonplace, to some extent on where the worker is based. Twitter, the first tech company to allow permanent remote work, now has full-time employees in 23 states, including Utah, Indiana, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and North Dakota. The change in pay appears to be less drastic between states with a higher cost of living, like California, than at Facebook. A Twitter software engineer in Georgia makes $171,000 in salary, the visa data shows, which is mid-range for the role. A senior software engineer in California makes just $10,000 more. Another engineer in Florida makes on the higher end of the scale at $218,000.
The visa information has limitations. It covers only jobs for which Twitter is hiring from other countries. No stock grants are included in the data, nor is experience and its influence on pay. Still, it gives solid insight into the company’s pay scale.
