NC Farm School 2022 program, former graduate speaks of opportunities

The NC Farm School helped Heather Haley, a third-generation iris grower, build The Broley Homestead.

Heather Haley is the founder and principal horticulturalist for the Broley Homestead, a 7-acre industrial nursery and iris farm in Ramseur.

Before farm school, she was an enthusiastic gardener with irises using in excess of area her husband grew vegetables. Growing irises is a time-honored tradition in Haley’s family, and her involvement in the American Iris Society connects her to real household spread through the state.

“One particular day, my spouse accidentally mentioned I could grow all the irises I wanted if I could make revenue carrying out it,” Haley said. “At the time, he didn’t feel I would essentially do this but the challenge was intriguing.”

The horticulturist reported there are around 80,000 unique varieties of irises. She wondered if she could make cash promoting them. So she recognized his challenge and observed a link for the North Carolina Farm School, which aided commence her farm.
